We don’t like the whole dramatic narrative, but at the current pace and scale of ecosystem destruction, it’s looking pretty grim for our species. However, the other side of this coin offers a crazy opportunity!
If we manage to rebuild healthy ecosystems on a big scale, we have a pretty good chance of turning this whole climate and biodiversity disaster around and actually build a world which is more sustainable, more diverse, more just, resilient and wild!
All we need to do is pick up our shovels, phones or whatever we can pick up to rewild our lands!
And here’s how we do it: We’ll start in Portugal, where we’ll rewild our pilot plot of land, guided by the 4 returns framework.

The what
Rewilding is a powerful—and our chosen—method for rebuilding thriving ecosystems across Europe.
The how
As a nature conservation and restoration approach, rewilding initiates ecological processes through small yet effective measures, leading to a cascade of positive ecological co-benefits.
For example, introducing keystone species such as beavers can remarkably boost biodiversity through the creation of new habitats, due to their natural behaviors that include building dams
The why
The ultimate goal of rewilding is to establish resilient ecosystems that require minimal human intervention.
In addition, European rewilding strives to generate significant social and economic benefits to local communities, given the region’s high population density.
Wilderness is a vital resource, not just on a global scale but especially in densely populated Europe.
At Sylvester, our democratic community, the Wild Climate Club, embraces the 4Returns framework by Commonland as its guiding compass for land use and co-management. As we set about envisioning long-term changes that may seem unimaginable today, having a clear set of guiding principles is crucial.
The 4 Returns framework tackles the four main losses associated with land degradation – loss of hope, social networks, biodiversity and economic value – and aims to regenerate the landscape to create 4 Returns instead: Inspiration, Natural Returns, Financial Returns and Social Returns.

Nestled in the far north of Galicia, where the land meets the sea and ancient forests cloak the hills, the Mañón region is a hidden gem of Atlantic biodiversity. Shaped by dramatic coastlines, winding rivers like the Sor, steep gorges, and the deep green of native oak and chestnut woodlands, Mañón offers a striking blend of rugged beauty and ecological richness.
Like many rural regions in Galicia, Mañón has witnessed increasing land abandonment, creating a rare opportunity for large-scale rewilding—an approach that allows natural processes to reclaim and regenerate the land. Here, rewilding does not mean excluding people, but recognizing their role as stewards and catalysts in restoring dynamic ecosystems.
Rewilding in Mañón holds promise for the return and resurgence of key species. The area already hosts wild boar, roe deer, and a wealth of birdlife, including red and black kites, buzzards, and owls. With the right conditions, apex species like the Iberian wolf may continue to thrive, playing a pivotal role in maintaining ecological balance.
We are a growing community of people coming together to take climate action into our own hands. Online and on the ground, we empower one another to restore ecosystems and become active land stewards in the fight against the climate crisis.
Few people own a lot of land. This is a problem. With rising property prices especially younger people have ever slimmer chances of owning a piece of land and taking care of it. This is also a problem. Especially for rewilding. With our WildTokens we give access to everyone to become a landsteward. Our WildTokens grant you access to the land, voting powers on what happens on it and much more.
Although it’s great, to meet and discuss online, there’s nothing quite like coming together for a fresh drink in a beatuful landscape with a bunch of likeminded people. It’s therefore a priority to us, to organise and inspire community events like festivals, wildlife expeditions and whatever else you can think of. And yes, we’ll make a campsite two visit the plot a priority!
Last but not least, Sylvester is already only possible through our existing community and strives to make it as entertaining and satisfying as possible to join the crew and get shit done. So if you feel like getting your hands dirty, please join our volunteer crew – from home or on the land. There’s plenty of work to be done… ecosystems to be rebuilt, wilderness to be established.
