We are thrilled to announce our involvement in Faixas Vivas, a project aimed at creating more sustainable fire protection solutions for Portugal. This initiative is focused on integrating fire prevention with the protection of native ecosystems, helping to safeguard both people and nature.
The Problem
Current fire protection measures in Portugal often disregard the value of native habitats, leading to the indiscriminate cutting of vegetation, including valuable trees and plant life. As forest fires become an ever-growing threat the existing Integrated Rural Fire Management System (SGIFR) of Portugal lacks the necessary environmental focus. Its regulations have led to harmful practices, such as the destruction of native forests, an increase in invasive species, and a decline in biodiversity. These fragile ecosystems, which could serve as natural barriers to fire, are being destroyed, worsening the country’s fire risk. Additionally, monoculture plantations, which are poorly managed, contribute to the fire hazard across Portugal.
Our Solution: Faixas Vivas
Faixas Vivas aims to change this by promoting fire protection measures that also protect nature. These “living strips” are rich in biodiversity and composed of native plants that help retain moisture, provide shade, and support ecosystems. In doing so, they act as natural firebreaks, reducing the risk of wildfires while preserving local habitats.
The Faixas Vivas coalition is made up of NGOs, private companies, and concerned citizens, all working towards a more sustainable future. Together, we are advocating for reforms to the SGIFR, pushing for fire management practices that both prevent wildfires and protect Portugal’s biodiversity, ecosystems, and landscapes.
Why It Matters
To effectively and sustainably prevent fires, we must preserve intact, diverse ecosystems that have natural fire resilience. It’s vital to stop the unnecessary destruction of native vegetation under the guise of fire prevention, which only worsens the problem. We support practices that respect ecological balance, involve the community, and are regionally adapted to protect both people and the environment.
